Fans naturally assumed something big was on the horizon, with many hoping for the long-awaited Season 6.
After months of waiting with no further updates, The Asylum finally posted an update on Halloween. But rather than the major revival fans had hoped for, this announcement revealed that Z Nation was now streaming for free on The Asylum Movie Channel. Available on platforms like Samsung TV, Roku, Amazon Freevee, Sling FreeStream, Xumo Play, and Plex, the news might be a treat for those wanting to rewatch the series at no cost, but it wasn’t quite what fans were expecting. This streaming release announcement seemed underwhelming compared to the hype generated back in March. Fans had spent months hoping for more—possibly a new season, a spin-off, or even a continuation of Black Summer, the Z Nation prequel. Personally, I found Black Summer to be a fascinating addition to the Z Nation universe, adding depth to the story and engaging a dedicated fanbase. So naturally, there was hope that this streaming move might be a hint at more to come.
However, the reality might be less exciting. After some digging, I checked the IMDb profiles of actors and actresses from both Z Nation and Black Summer, and there’s no indication of any upcoming projects suggesting a return. Furthermore, back in April 2023, the Black Summer co-creator responded to a fan’s inquiry on Twitter with a straightforward “Sadly, nah,” when asked about the possibility of a third season for Black Summer. This response, coupled with the lack of updates, doesn’t paint an optimistic picture.
So, was this Halloween announcement about streaming access the “major announcement” fans had been waiting for? Maybe it was just a clever marketing move to bring attention back to the franchise. But without any word on a new season, spin-off, or a return of Black Summer, fans are still left hanging.
