“From”: A Small Town Horror That’ll Keep You Up at Night
Ever had one of those road trips where you just can’t seem to find your way out of a town? Well, buckle up, horror fans, because EPIX’s (now MGM+) “From” takes that concept and cranks it up to eleven. This show is like if “Twin Peaks” and “Lost” had a baby, then raised it on a steady diet of Stephen King novels and existential dread.
“From” drops us into the middle of a nameless town surrounded by a mysterious forest. Sounds quaint, right? Wrong. This place is the hotel California of small towns – you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave. And trust me, after spending a night here, you’ll be begging to leave.
The story kicks off when the Matthews family – Jim, Tabitha, and their kids Julie and Ethan – find themselves trapped in town after a car accident. They quickly learn that they’re not alone. The town is full of people who’ve all arrived the same way: driving through, getting turned around, and suddenly finding themselves unable to leave. It’s like the world’s worst tourist trap, except instead of overpriced souvenirs, you get mortal terror.
Now, being stuck in a creepy town would be bad enough, but “From” isn’t content to stop there. Oh no, it’s got to add flesh-eating monsters to the mix. Every night, when the sun goes down, these horrifying creatures emerge from the surrounding forest. They look human… until they don’t. And let’s just say, you do not want to invite these guys to dinner, unless you want to be the main course.
The town’s residents have developed a whole set of rules and rituals to survive these nightly attacks. Windows are boarded up, talismans are hung, and everyone better be inside before sundown or… well, let’s just say the cleanup crew will be busy in the morning.
Our main guide through this nightmare is Sheriff Boyd Stevens, played by the always-awesome Harold Perrineau (yeah, the guy from “Lost” – he just can’t seem to escape mysterious locations). Boyd’s trying his best to keep everyone alive and sane, but that’s easier said than done when you’re dealing with monster attacks, dwindling resources, and the constant psychological toll of being trapped in a place where nothing makes sense.
As the Matthews family tries to adjust to their new reality, we’re introduced to a cast of characters who are all dealing with their own traumas and secrets. There’s Donna, the town’s no-nonsense leader; Ellis, a boy who was born in the town and has never known anything else; Jade, a wise-cracking radio DJ trying to keep everyone’s spirits up; and many more. Each character adds another layer to the mystery, making you wonder: what’s their story? How long have they been here? And most importantly, do they know more than they’re letting on?
One of the things that makes “From” so addictive is its masterful balance of horror and mystery. Sure, the monster attacks are terrifying (seriously, you might want to watch this one with the lights on), but it’s the questions that really keep you up at night. Where is this place? Why are they all trapped here? Is there a way out? The show doles out clues and revelations at a tantalizingly slow pace, always giving you just enough to form a new theory, only to flip the script in the next episode.
But “From” isn’t just about scares and mysteries. At its heart, it’s a story about people trying to hold onto their humanity in an inhuman situation. We see characters grappling with loss, forming unlikely friendships, and struggling to maintain hope in the face of seemingly endless horror. It’s these human moments that give weight to the supernatural elements, making the stakes feel all too real.
The show also isn’t afraid to get weird. Like, really weird. There are supernatural elements beyond just the monsters that’ll have you scratching your head and rewatching scenes to make sure you saw what you thought you saw. Mysterious symbols, time loops, and some good old-fashioned small-town secrets all add to the delightfully creepy atmosphere.
As the series progresses, the mysteries deepen and the danger intensifies. New arrivals bring fresh perspectives and potential clues, while long-time residents start to crack under the pressure. And all the while, those creatures in the forest are getting bolder, smarter, and hungrier.
By the end of the first season, you’ll have some answers, but probably twice as many questions. And trust me, you’ll be counting the days until the next season drops. “From” is the kind of show that gets under your skin, making you question everything you see and hear. You’ll find yourself poring over fan theories online, rewatching episodes for clues you might have missed, and maybe even checking your own windows at night… just in case.
So, if you’re in the mood for a show that combines bone-chilling horror with mind-bending mystery, “From” is absolutely worth your time. It’s got scares aplenty, but it’s the deeper questions about human nature, reality, and the unknown that’ll really haunt you.
Just remember: if you ever find yourself on a road trip and come across a quaint little town in the middle of nowhere, maybe just keep driving. You never know what might be waiting for you when the sun goes down.
